In January, more than 1.1 million passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports, a decrease of 61 per cent compared to January 2019. As expected, the recovery in air travel slowed in January compared to previous months due to the pandemic and seasonally weaker travel during the month. Compared to January 2021, which was also greatly affected by the pandemic, passenger volume increased 224 per cent.

To encourage companies and other organisations operating at Swedavia’s airports to become fossil-free and start refuelling with HVO, fossil-free diesel, on January 1 Swedavia introduced a special HVO 100 incentive at Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Göteborg Landvetter Airport. The goal is now for all operations at every Swedavia airport to be fossil-free by 2025.
2021 was the second straight year that air travel was heavily impacted by Covid. Despite the rebound during the autumn, air travel remained at levels comparable to those seen in the early 1980s. Since the start of the pandemic, air travel at Swedavia’s airports has now fallen by 58 million passengers.
The German low cost carrier Eurowings continues to expand in the Swedish market and at Göteborg Landvetter Airport. In conjunction with the summer season, the airline will launch non-stop service to Germany’s second largest city, Hamburg. Eurowings is thus expanding its range of flights from Gothenburg with another destination alongside its existing air link to Düsseldorf.
Ryanair continues to strengthen its presence in the Swedish market and will launch another European route from Stockholm Arlanda Airport for the summer season. The air link to the Ukrainian capital of Kiev will be the 37th new direct route launched by Ryanair from its new base at Arlanda since it opened in the autumn.

The connection to Rijeka in Croatia will be a new addition to Arlanda's destination offering, and the 36th new direct route that Ryanair launches from the new base at Arlanda.
