Qatar Airways new direct route inaugurated at Göteborg Landvetter Airport

The five-star carrier Qatar Airways, which was named the top airline in the world in 2017, has now inaugurated their direct route between Doha and Göteborg Landvetter Airport. The non-stop service is operated five times a week with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner wich was welcomed with a water salute on arrival in Gothenburg. Also, at the inaugural ceremony the Key to the City of Gothenburg was awarded to Qatar Airways for an international establishment considered to be of great importance to the region. With Doha as a hub, leisure and business travellers in western Sweden will be able to smoothly continue on to the carrier’s 160 destinations worldwide. The new non-stop service also means great cargo potential for export companies in western Sweden.

Each year, about 230,000 people fly from Gothenburg to different destinations in Asia. Beginning in December, people in western Sweden will be able to conveniently fly non-stop to Doha and continue on to one of the carrier’s 160 destinations. For the many global companies in western Sweden, the new direct route provides a faster journey overall to business partners in Asia and Africa. For exporting companies in western Sweden, it means great potential to fly more cargo volume between Gothenburg and Asia.

”Sweden is Scandinavia’s biggest economy and one of Europe’s strongest economies. New direct routes are an important contributing factor as improved market connectivity is crucial for Sweden’s tourism industry, business community, and for attracting investments and know-how to the region. We are very pleased that we at Swedavia, together with our regional partners, have been able to present to Qatar Airways the large market potential in the West of Sweden, resulting in the new direct route between Gothenburg and Doha. It is with great pleasure that we welcome this top of the line global airline to Göteborg Landvetter Airport”, said Jonas Abrahamsson, CEO at Swedavia

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said: “We are tremendously excited to launch direct services to the beautiful city of Gothenburg, a key new addition to our European network. This important new Nordic gateway will provide enhanced connectivity to both business and leisure travellers, and will help connect the Swedish people to our extensive global network of more than 160 destinations worldwide. We look forward to bringing visitors to Gothenburg, where they can experience for themselves the delights this charming city has to offer.”

At the inauguration, Qatar Airways was also awarded The Key to the City of Gothenburg 2018 for the Year's Most Interesting International Establishment. The reward is awarded annually to establishments that are considered to be of great importance to the region. Business Region Gothenburg´s Establishment Manager, Henrik Einarsson, handed over the symbolic gold key to Christian Deresjö, Qatar Airway's Nordic Manager.
From Göteborg Landvetter, Doha in the Persian Gulf is reached in seven hours, for a long weekend of experiences or as a stop over travelling onwards. The business community and visitor industry in the western Swedish region together confirm this milestone for Göteborg Landvetter as Qatar Airways invests in this new direct route.

The direct route will be operated with five weekly departures from Göteborg Landvetter to Doha. The aircraft model is a Boeing 787 Dreamliner with seating for 254 passengers.
