Summer travel is in full swing – arrive at Stockholm Arlanda three hours before your departure

Summer travel is in full swing, and over the next few days Stockholm Arlanda Airport is expected to handle many passengers. That means great pressure on the entire airport and a risk of crowding and longer waiting times at both check-in and the security checkpoints. Swedavia asks everyone who is flying to be at the airport when the check-in and bag drop for their flight open. This weekend we are limiting the inflow to the terminal. Only passengers who have less than three hours to departure will be allowed to enter. Passengers arriving earlier may be directed to a designated waiting area. To make it easier for passengers, the opening hours at the security checkpoints in Terminal 5 have been expanded.

All three major terminals are now open at Arlanda – Terminal 2, Terminal 4, and Terminal 5. Check-in and security screening are available in all three terminals. Passengers check in at the terminal their airline has its counters in.

A brand-new walkway now connects Terminal 4 with Terminal 5. With the walkway, passengers can now reach all gates from the three security checkpoints. People who have checked in their baggage can thus use any security checkpoint in Terminal 5 or Terminal 4. Staffing at the security checkpoints will be balanced on a need’s basis.

The general recommendation from Swedavia is that passengers should be at Arlanda up to three hours before their departure. That is usually when the airlines open their check-in and bag drop. People’s own journey always determines how long before their departure they need to be at the airport.

Being at the airport more than three hours before departure increases the risk of crowding and the formation of longer queues, especially at the security checkpoints in Terminal 5. There is usually a risk of queues forming during the morning hours at Arlanda, when a large number of passengers depart at the same time.

Access to the terminal will be limited for safety reasons during this weekend. Only passengers with less than three hours before their departure will be allowed in.

Swedavia will have a large number of employees and extra staff on hand to help passengers between the different security checkpoints as well as passengers who are running short of time.

Factors that determine when passengers should be at the airport are mainly which airline they are flying with, what time their departure is, and whether they will check in or not. For people who must go through border control, additional time may be needed. Passengers who have only hand baggage can go straight to the security checkpoint.

Swedavia has also expanded the opening hours for the security checkpoints in Terminal 5. For example, Checkpoint F in Terminal 5 opens as early as 1:15 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. For more information about opening hours at the security checkpoints, see security checkpoint opening hours.
