Swedavia’s passengers and employees donate nearly 1.4 million kronor to the Swedish Red Cross

Swedavia’s passengers and employees across Sweden have collected nearly 1.4 million Swedish kronor for the Swedish Red Cross’s humanitarian work. In a handover ceremony on Friday at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Swedavia’s president and CEO, Jonas Abrahamsson, presented the check to the Swedish Red Cross.

“For us, naturally it feels both good and important that Swedavia, together with passengers and employees, has been able to continue contributing to the Swedish Red Cross’s important relief work, particularly in these times of uncertainty and conflicts in our world. I would like to extend my warm thanks to everyone for the funds collected over the past year, but also for everyone’s contributions to the continued work of collecting funds at our airports,” says Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia’s president and CEO.

In 2020 and 2021, passengers and employees raised nearly 1.4 million kronor, mostly through cash donations. At a number of Swedavia’s airports, it is possible for passengers and employees to make a donation in Swedish and other currencies in designated collection boxes. The funds are donated with no conditions to the Swedish Red Cross’s relief work.

“We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Swedavia’s staff and passengers for this important contribution. The Swedish Red Cross will now continue to mobilise in order to best respond to the massive humanitarian needs we are seeing across the globe, in connection with the crisis in Ukraine as well as other ongoing crises. We will also strengthen Swedish response capacity through committed volunteers and local branches,” says Martin Ärnlöv, secretary general of the Swedish Red Cross.

Swedavia and the Swedish Red Cross have worked in collaboration for many years. Along with contributions in different currencies from employees and passengers, Swedavia also donates unclaimed property left at the airports, for instance, to the Swedish Red Cross’s shops, where the surplus proceeds from the sale go to the organisation’s local, national and international humanitarian efforts. The Swedish Red Cross may also provide assistance at the airports if necessary with trained crisis supporters.
