Press release -
Ryanair and Wizz Air continue to expand at Malmö Airport and add two more direct routes
Both Ryanair and Wizz Air continue to see new opportunities in the Swedish market and are expanding their range of destinations on offer from the Greater Copenhagen region and Malmö Airport with new connections to the Balkans.
The Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair recently announced its return to Malmö Airport after being absent for a time. The airline will resume service to the Polish city of Krakow in early June and launch domestic service to Stockholm Arlanda this autumn. Another direct route will be launched in the autumn, this time to Ryanair’s recently opened based in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia.
The Hungarian low cost carrier Wizz Air, which currently flies to four countries in the Balkans from Malmö, is also adding a destination. In time for summer, the airline is offering a good weekend product to Banja Luka, the second largest city in Bosnia-Herzegovina after the capital, Sarajevo. Wizz Air also currently serves Tuzla twice weekly.
When the world opens up again, there is a longing to travel and meet people, and the routes will be a welcome addition, especially for leisure travellers who want to visit friends and relatives. There are a large number of people living in southern Sweden, and Skåne (Scania) in particular, with relations in the Balkans, including Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. Croatia is also a very popular tourist destination for Swedes.
“It is very gratifying that both Ryanair and Wizz Air see opportunities in Southern Sweden and the Greater Copenhagen region and have chosen to expand at Malmö Airport, especially after a period that has been extremely difficult for the whole industry. The entire Balkan region is a popular destination from Malmö, and these destinations are an important addition and complement to our existing range of flights, for tourists in general but especially for the important visiting friends and relatives travel segment. Access will be important in the restart after the pandemic, and more direct air links are crucial to regional growth and to the tourism industry all across Sweden,” says Elizabeth Axtelius, Director Aviation Business at Swedavia Airports.
“We are cautiously optimistic since the vaccination roll-out, the pandemic and travel restrictions are critical to the recovery both in Sweden and around the world. We hope the situation will allow this and that our passengers are ready to travel again this summer,” concludes Elizabeth Axtelius.
Wizz Air will serve Malmö Airport (MMX) – Banja Luka International Airport (BNX) twice weekly with an A320 aircraft model starting June 25, 2021.
Ryanair will serve Malmö Airport (MMX) – Zagreb Franjo Tudman Airport (ZAG) twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, starting in September 2021.
