Swedavia’s traffic statistics for February 2024

In February, Swedavia's ten airports served nearly 2.2 million passengers, which is 4 per cent higher than February of last year. The increase continues to be driven by international travel, which increased 8 per cent during the month. Higher passenger traffic is partly attributable to increased winter holiday travel, primarily from Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Göteborg Landvetter Airport, but also from Umeå Airport and Åre Östersund Airport. Our airports are now preparing for the summer traffic season, which begins in late March/early April . The summer traffic season will bring an increase in connectivity at Swedavia's airports with about 25 new routes so far, including 10 brand new destinations.

"Traffic has been characterized by strong winter holiday traffic at our major airports, as well as our regional airports in the north. International travel increased 8 per cent compared to February last year, while domestic traffic declined, though at a slower rate than the previous month", says Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia's president and CEO.

"Despite uncertainties related to the weak economy, inflation and in the surrounding world, travel continues to be a priority. Ahead of the summer traffic season, which starts at the end of March, our range of routes and destinations will be further strengthened with the addition of almost 25 routes. This includes significant improvements in connectivity to North America," says Jonas Abrahamsson.

Several new routes will be introduced over the next few months in connection with the roll out of the airlines' summer traffic programmes, which will see an increase in both the number of routes and destinations at Swedavia's airports. So far, almost 14 new routes will be introduced from Stockholm Arlanda and 8 new routes from Gothenburg during this year’s summer traffic programme – with around ten new destinations, such as SAS's new routes between Arlanda-Seville and Arlanda-Kalamata, Norwegian's new route between Arlanda-Bari and Landvetter-Dubrovnik, Transavia FR's new route between Arlanda-Marseille and Ryanair's new route between Landvetter-Sarajevo.

Connectivity to North America will also be strengthened, with a total of almost 30 departures per week and up to 5 departures per day from Stockholm Arlanda. Air Canada, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines will operate routes to Toronto, Montreal and New York several times a week starting 10 April (Delta Air Lines), 6 June (United Airlines) and 13 June (Air Canada), in addition to the existing routes operated by SAS between Arlanda-Toronto and Arlanda-New York.

In February, nearly 2.2 million passengers flew via Swedavia's ten airports, which is a 4 per cent increase compared to February 2023. International travel increased 8 per cent to over 1.5 million passengers, while domestic travel decreased 6 per cent to just over 600,000 passengers.
Total passenger traffic at Swedavia's airports in February was about 77 per cent of pre-pandemic levels in February 2019.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport served close to 1.5 million passengers in February, which is an increase of 7 percent compared to February of last year. International travel increased 11 per cent to 1.2 million passengers, while domestic travel decreased 6 per cent to just under 300,000 passengers. Overall, passenger levels at Stockholm Arlanda in February were 84 per cent of pre-pandemic levels in February 2019.

Göteborg Landvetter Airport served nearly 330,000 passengers in February, an increase of 7 per cent compared to February 2023. International travel increased by 9 percent to 285,000 passengers, while domestic travel decreased 9 percent to just over 43,000 passengers. In January, passenger levels at Göteborg Landvetter were 75 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

The air travel trend at Swedavia’s other airports was mixed in February. Among Swedavia’s regional airports, Kiruna saw the best trend in February, as well as the best numbers compared to traffic numbers before the pandemic, with close to 26,000 passengers. After Kiruna Airport, Ronneby Airport, Åre Östersund and Umeå Airport were second, third and fourth, respectively for passenger growth in February compared to February of last year. Malmö Airport, Bromma Stockholm Airport and Luleå Airport had the weakest growth in February compared to February last year.
