Swedavia’s traffic statistics for January 2024

During January, Swedavia's ten airports served nearly 2.1 million passengers, which is on a par with the number of passengers in January of last year. The trend of stronger demand for international travel, especially to Europe, and weaker demand for domestic travel continued in January, which is one of the weakest travel months of the year. Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Göteborg Landvetter Airport had the highest growth, while Kiruna Airport was the regional airport with the highest growth.

"In January, demand for air travel was stable, despite uncertainties such as the global situation, economic uncertainty and personal finances. International travel continued to increase during the month, which mainly benefited our major airports but also Luleå Airport. Domestic travel, on the other hand, continues to show a weaker trend. Although there are significant uncertainties, we expect increased traffic and a greater range of routes at our airports later this spring and during the summer. At the same time, there are signs that the economic situation will improve somewhat in the period ahead, which is also likely to increase demand for air travel", says Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia's president and CEO.

During January, nearly 2.1 million passengers flew through Swedavia's ten airports, compared with just over 2.1 million passengers in January last year. International travel increased 2 percent to 1.5 million passengers, while domestic travel increased 7 per cent to just under 600,000 passengers.
Total passenger traffic at Swedavia's airports in January was about 74 per cent of pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport served more than 1.4 million passengers in January, which is a 1 per cent increase compared to January of last year. International travel increased 2 per cent to 1.2 million passengers, while domestic travel increased 9 per cent to just under 200,000 passengers. Overall, passenger levels at Stockholm Arlanda in January were close to 80 per cent of pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Göteborg Landvetter Airport served more than 300,000 passengers in January, an increase of 3 per cent compared to January 2023. International travel increased by 6 per cent to 300,000 passengers, while domestic travel decreased 16 per cent to just under 40,000 passengers. In January, passenger levels at Göteborg Landvetter were 74 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

The air travel trend at Swedavia’s other airports was mixed in the first month of the year. Among Swedavia’s regional airports, Kiruna saw the best recovery both in January and compared to traffic numbers before the pandemic, with close to 23,000 passengers. After Kiruna Airport, Visby Airport and Luleå Airport were second and third, respectively for passenger growth in January compared to January of last year. Malmö Airport and Åre Östersund Airport had the weakest growth in January compared to January of last year.
