Focus on regional airports when TUI launch summer program for 2024

Demand for air travel continue to show resilience and the Swedes' longing for sunny shores and warm weather shows few signs of decline. After a summer with strong booking levels in almost the entire country, TUI is investing heavily in charter trips from regional airports and will launch new and returning routes from Malmö Airport, Umeå Airport, Luleå Airport and Visby Airport ahead of the coming season. In total 9 charter destinations will be operated from Swedavias airports adding up to a little over 160 departures.

With a Swedish summer that offers rain as often as sunshine, many Swedes choose to play it safe and book a trip to the south of Europe. But it's not just warm weather and sunny shores that attracts, but the opportunity to discover new places and cultures. This is something that the well-known travel operator TUI has noticed and is now making one of its biggest launches from regional airports. Ahead of the spring and summer of 2024, TUI is expanding the charter program on four of Swedavia’s airports, Malmö Airport, Umeå Airport, Luleå Airport and Visby Airport. In total, nine charter destinations will be operated with just over 160 departures. The destinations are Antalya, Burgas, Chania, Catania, Kos, Larnaca, Palma, Rhodes and Split.

- Our regional airports play an important role in their local areas in many ways. TUI making this investment in regional airports shows a great confidence in the Swedish air travel market and an understanding of the importance of reaching out to the world from the local area, says Elizabeth Axtelius, Director Aviation Business at Swedavia. By being able to offer a wide range of both charter and regular services at our airports and in this way make it easier for people to meet, is very important for Swedavia, she says.

- Our new summer program has a much wider range of destinations from Swedavia’s regional airports, several which are new on offer. This will give our customers greater freedom of choice when choosing a destination. Many people prefer to travel from their regional airport and in this way, we offer travelers an extra convenience and service that enhances the entire holiday experience, says Tommy Serban, Commercial Director at TUI.

Irregular departures throughout the season
TUI's summer program will be operated in collaboration with the airlines Jettime, Freebird and Aegean Airlines. The departures will be scheduled with some irregularity distributed throughout the season, to enable a wider range and balance capacity. The historically more popular destinations have more departures, while the new ones have fewer.

Swedavia’s work for fossil-free aviation
Swedavia has carried out ambitious climate work for many years. All ten of its airports achieved the goal of zero fossil carbon dioxide emissions from their own operations by year-end 2020.
